Washington Pushes to Replace South Africa with Poland at 2026 G20 Summit

The US, which will host the 2026 G20, suggested Poland take South Africa’s spot at the summit, criticizing South Africa’s policies. Tensions between the US and South Africa have grown over the years due to several controversial actions by Pretoria, based on a bill presented to the US Senate under the Biden administration in 2023, including:

1. Collaborating with countries considered adversaries or not freedom-friendly

2. Allowing China to become more involved in South African affairs

3. Maintaining race-based laws

4. Allowing questionable behavior from politicians like Julius Malema

5. Former Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor’s engagement with Iran

6. Taking Israel to court

South Africa rejected the US move, insisting it remains a full G20 member. The US decision signals a focus on economic growth over issues like climate change, inequality, or redistribution.
